This adventurous expedition takes us off the beaten track as we explore Borneo’s remote jungle. We start by rafting down the Kiulu River and cycling back before setting off to the jungle. We will trek through the rainforest, camping in remote villages and summiting South East Asia’s highest peak – Mount Kinabalu.
Really enjoyed the holiday – guides were outstanding, well balanced itinerary.
This expedition gives you the opportunity to trek through Borneo’s dense tropical rainforests, through remote villages en-route to the spectacular Mount Kinabalu.
Our expedition begins with rafting down the Kiulu River, a cycle back up through the beautiful valley, before we begin our trek through the hot humid rainforest and traditional Dusun villages. We camp in villages where few tourists visit and the ladies love to cook for us with food from their farms and show us a little of their cultural dancing and songs.
The trek finishes with sun rise on the highest peak of South East Asia, Mount Kinabalu. The view from the summit is spectacular out over the South China Sea. A much rewarded bath in the hot springs is well deserved after the descent.
At the end of our trek we head south wildlife spotting at the Kinabatangan Wildlife Reserve and Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary.
BORNEO ADVENTURE HOLIDAY ITINERARY
Day 1: Kota Kinabalu (D)
We will be met at the airport and transferred to our hotel in the centre of Kota Kinabalu. Dinner this evening will be at a typical Malaysian restaurant featuring local food.
Day 2: Rafting on the Kiulu River and Bike in the Kiulu Valley (B,L,D)
This morning we have a short transfer to the beautiful Kiulu valley where we go white water rafting on the Kiulu River (Grade 2). Following a BBQ lunch and some time to relax by the river, we then set out on our bikes and cycle through the Kiulu valley to our campsite at Rangalau Camp.
Day 3: Trekking (B,L,D)
This morning we wake up to the view of Mount Kinabalu. After breakfast, we need a 25 minute tranfer to begin trekking into a remote area of Sabah. Moving away from the river we set out into the jungle and pass through the occasional village. The trekking is hot and sweaty with some steep hills to climb. Tonight we sleep in tents or hammocks or the village community hall at Kampung Sinasang where the ladies in the village will cook us a typical Malaysian feast.
Day 4: Trekking until Rungus Mahaba (B,L,D)
We continue our trek from Kampung Sinasang through beautiful forest, to our next camp at a village called Rungus Mahaba. Again it will be a tough day as much of the terrain is hilly but the views are spectacular and we pass through a pretty village with very friendly local people. We sleep in tents or haammocks or the village community hall.
Day 5: Trekking in the Jungle and Kundasang (B,L,D)
After breakfast we set off trekking again until we reach Pekan Nabalu, a little market area on the road to Mount Kinabalu. From here, we will take a short bus transfer to Kundasang where we will overnight in 2 star hotel with the most amazing views of Mount Kinabalu.
Day 6: Climbing Mount Kinabalu (B,L,D)
Today, we head to the National Park where we begin our 7 km climb up to the mountain hut on the slopes of Mount Kinabalu. Tonight we sleep in dorms at the mountain huts at Laban Rata, some 3280 meters ASL.
Day 7: Trekking to the summit and hot springs (B,L,D)
This morning we depart from our hut at 3am and trek up to the summit, as the sun is rising. It is a spectacular view of the foothills, down to the South China Sea. We then descend back to the park HQ and take a bus to poring Hot Springs to spend the evening relaxing our tired legs in the baths.
Day 8: Kinabatangan Wildlife Reserve (B,L,D)
Our next destination is the Kinabatangan Wildlife Reserve. On arrival, we will have time to settle in before heading out on an afternoon and sunset river cruise. This reserve is famous for its abundance of wildlife and we guarantee that you will see proboscis monkeys in the wild. There are also regular sightings of wild orangutan, elephants, gibbons, hornbills and crocodiles.
Day 9: River Cruise and Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary (B,L,D)
Another early morning today as we wake up before the sun rises to embark on a dawn river cruise to watch the wildlife come to life. It is fascinating to watch the proboscis monkeys waken in their canopy homes. After breakfast, we transfer to Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary via Gomantong caves arriving in time for the afternoon feeding session.
Day 10: Rainforest Discovery Centre and Canopy Walkway (B)
Before we leave for our flight to Kota Kinabalu, we will have time to visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre and the canopy walkway. Tonight we stay in a small beach resort with a swimming pool.
Day 11: Free Activities (B)
Today is free from organised activities. However, there are many options to keep us busy including a visit to a tropical island, adventure park or wildlife park. There is also the option to go into the city for any last minute shopping or you can simply relax by the swimming pool.
Day 12: Flights Home (B)
Transfer to airport, expedition ends

We had a great 2 weeks in Malaysia, taking in the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, then on to Borneo to Kuching, Mulu, Kota Kinabalu and also staying for two nights with the Iban tribe. A great mix of activities - trekking, climbing, many river trips and ending up relaxing at the Shangri La in Rasa Ria. My own area of interest is the local flora and this was catered for very well in the various walks.
The organisation was spot on and our guides were very well informed and also very good cooks! The hotels were very good and it was a memorable holiday. Well done to Pioneer!
I want to say a huge thanks on behalf of us all for what was a wonderful holiday!
The itinerary was great and the accommodation excellent. Everything worked like clockwork - guides met us on time at all locations and the guides themselves were top-drawer - the best set of guides I have encountered on a holiday (please pass on our thanks to Insight Borneo for their sterling work and their quality guides - particularly Adic, Chris (exceptional), Vino, Dawi and Clarence).
A great holiday all round - really appreciated!!
Really enjoyed the holiday - guides were outstanding, well balanced itinerary. Kinabalu climb was amazing and certainly recommend the via ferrata. Overall a fabulous holiday, beautifully organised and charming guide - thank-you
