The historical walking tour around the old town is a great opportunity to feel the unique energy of this magical place and its people. The Pelourinho is situated in the historical center of Salvador. Declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1985, it is an eminent example of colonial history and symbol of the black movement in Bahia. The Pelourinho offers visitors a number of churches, museums, local artists' studios, galleries, shops and restaurants. Pelourinho's main tourist attractions include the famous writer Jorge Amado's House, the cultural group Olodum, São Francisco Church and the Cathedral Basílica as well as the traditional Cravinho Bar (where you might want to go for an optional caipirinha - not included).

Stop to shop and visit optionally the Pierre Verger gallery or the studio of Goya Lopes (a Bahian textile designer who seeks inspiration in the themes of African-Brazilian musicality in Bahia). Our next stop is Elevador Lacerda, built in 1873 and connecting nowadays the Upper City and the Lower City as an important means of transport both for locals and tourists. From there you can enjoy the panoramic view of the All Saints Bay and Mercado Modelo and relax after this cultural walking tour.

Walking city tour (from historic centre hotels)

The São Luis architectonic complex consists of more than 3.5 thousand buildings, most from the 18th and 19th Centuries. The townhouses that line the narrow downtown streets and Praia Grande exhibit various colors and shapes of ornamental Portuguese tiles on their façades. Approximately one thousand of these historical constructions have been restored. The buildings most deserving of attention include the Arthur Azevedo Theater, from 1817, in neo-Classic style, and the Palace of the Lions that was originally a fortress erected by the French, and was later transformed into a palace by the Portuguese. Another interesting place to visit in the historical center is the Tulhas' Market where local products can be acquired.

Portas da Amazônia São Luis Breakfast included

Villa Jurará Breakfast included

Set amidst a small fishing village this pousada offers authentic rustic charm as well as access to the Lençóis Maranhenses national park, just an hour and a half away by foot. With only seven suites, each fitted with its own private bathroom and air conditioning, Vila Jurará provides intimacy and comfort in a simplistic aesthetic that is in keeping with Atins' bucolic setting. Sandy underfoot and shade-dappled by trees hung with hammocks, the villa's grounds provide the perfect place to stretch out and relax after a day's exploration, with snacks and cool drinks available from its very own bar. Enjoy a colourful breakfast spread that includes delicious fresh cake and fruits as well as local specialities. The friendly staff are happy to help with organising airport transfers, trekking expeditions and any other queries.

The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park constitutes a vast desert of white sand dunes, intermittent crystal-clear freshwater lagoons, remote goat farming communities and largely unstudied wildlife. This wild terrain extends over an area of 155,000 hectares and there is no better way of exploring it than on foot.

Day 1 | Departure (06:00) by 4x4 via the coast to the Rio Negro River mouth, 20km north of Atins, inside the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. This is the starting point of today's 4-hour hike inland across dunes and lagoons to Baixa Grande, a vast wetland oasis in the heart of the National Park. Several rest stops are made along the way to admire the views and recharge energy levels with fruit, cereal bars, juices and other goodies in the provided lunchbox. After settling into camp, community members prepare 'caipira' chicken or goat stew for lunch and dinner, a regional specialty and perfect basis for mingling with the locals. As the day draws to close, enjoy the sunset from atop of a nearby dune and contemplate the starry night sky before slipping into a cosy hammock for the night.

Day 2 | After breakfast (06:00) set off on a spectacular 9km/5hour hike through thick sand and past numerous dune lakes to 'Queimada dos Britos', a second oasis and home to a remote and resilient community of goat farmers who continue to tend to their livestock and live in hand thatched homes, as if time has stood still. Take in local culture, stories and taste traditional dishes with the locals as they share the joys and hardships of rural life. Overnight in hammocks.

Day 3 | Leaving crisp and early (04:00), today´s 12km/7hour hike takes us to Betânia. This stretch is particularly scenic as it passes the region's biggest lagoons. Arrival in Betânia, lunch and rest. Pick-up at 13:00 and drive to Santo Amaro.

Located in the middle of São Luis' historical center, the colonial Pousada Portas da Amazônia features a total of 29 rooms (8 master rooms and 21 comfort rooms). All units are equipped with a minibar, hot water shower, TV and air conditioning. The master rooms offer stunning views on the historical center and the comfort rooms offer a view of the internal lush tropical gardens. The pousada leisure facilities include a reading lounge, cyber café, WIFI area and a massage room.
