Pioneer Expeditions was founded with a clear vision: to go beyond the ordinary and offer genuinely off-the-beaten-track adventures. From the outset, we set out to create extraordinary ‘Pioneer Firsts’ — from the North to South traverse of Liverpool Land in Greenland to being the first operator offering a group rafting trip down the Matsiatra River in Madagascar.
As we’ve grown, our journeys have evolved, but that spirit of adventure remains at the heart of everything we do. We continue to explore and push boundaries with challenging trips in places like Argentina and Komodo, while also developing a deep passion for wildlife and conservation-led travel.
Today, some of our most special experiences are rooted in this connection to the natural world — from the unique ecosystems of Madagascar to the rainforests of Borneo, the rich biodiversity of Costa Rica, and the extraordinary wildlife encounters of the Galápagos.

Philip Beale
Director
Philip is a founder of Pioneer Expedition and hs passion for adventure travel began at school, culminating in winning a coveted place on Operation Drake, where he sailed aboard the Eye of the Wind through the South Pacific, visiting Fiji, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea — an experience that cemented a lifelong commitment to exploration and expedition travel.
Philip studied politics at Hull University before joining the Royal Navy, pursuing his interest in maritime exploration. He has since organised and led three major “Kon-Tiki” style expeditions, including the Borobudur Ship Expedition, the Phoenicia Ship Expedition, and the Phoenicians Before Columbus Expedition, which successfully sailed a replica Phoenician vessel from Carthage across the Atlantic to the Americas.
Today, Philip oversees Pioneer’s expedition-led projects, including our “Expeditions with a Purpose” programme run in partnership with legendary explorer John Blashford-Snell, ensuring each journey delivers genuine adventure alongside meaningful scientific and cultural outcomes.
An acknowledged expert in Indonesia, Philip was awarded a state medal for Services to Indonesian Culture by President Megawati of the Republic of Indonesia following the Borobudur expedition. He is the author of Sailing Close to the Wind and Atlantic BC, is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, a member of the Scientific Exploration Society, and sits on their Honorary Advisory Board — bringing a lifetime of expedition experience to every Pioneer journey.

Laurenne Mansbridge

Laurenne discovered her passion for travel early, taking time out before university to explore the world and develop a deep love for adventure, culture and wildlife. After a decade in corporate management, she decided to follow her heart and embarked on an extended journey that would ultimately shape the foundations of Pioneer Expeditions.
Now with over 20 years’ experience in travel design and expedition operations, Laurenne leads the organisation as a hands-on Director, she is closely involved in every aspect of the business — from shaping new journeys and working with local partners, to ensuring every client receives outstanding personal service from first enquiry to their return home.
A genuine expert in Madagascar and several other wildlife-rich destinations, Laurenne is known for her meticulous attention to detail, creativity in itinerary design, and unwavering commitment to delivering unforgettable, responsibly run adventures.
When she’s not crafting expeditions, Laurenne is rarely far from the water — sailing, diving, kayaking or rafting — and on land she can usually be found hiking in wild places. She travels regularly looking for inspiration for the next generation of Pioneer journeys.

Rafe Stone
Director
Rafe’s love of travel was sparked early through books, with Paul Theroux’s The Old Patagonian Express proving particularly influential and igniting a fascination with Latin America. Never one to follow the easiest path, while many of his friends headed to Australia via Thailand in 1990, Rafe chose instead to travel through Latin America, spending several months exploring the region and laying the foundations for a lifelong connection. With many years’ experience in the travel industry, Rafe began his career in administration before working his way up to become Product Manager for Central America at Journey Latin America. There, he was a key member of the sales team and an early advocate of sustainable travel, with his contribution recognised through a team industry award in 2018. – Rafe joined Pioneer Expeditions four years ago and is now a Co-Director of the company, playing a hands-on role across marketing, creative content, sales, and product development for all destinations. While he is an expert in Latin America, his travels have taken him far and wide — from getting engaged in Peru to honeymooning in Madagascar. Away from expedition planning, Rafe can often be found kayaking, attempting (with mixed success) to master the guitar, or cooking — a passion that led him to set up his own taqueria in West London during Covid where lives in West London with his wife and two teenage boys.

Before joining Pioneer 5 years ago, Teresa had over 26 years in the yachting industry, Teresa’s career has been shaped by international travel, organisation and exceptional customer care. From attending boat shows and conferences across Australia, the USA and beyond, she developed a deep appreciation for different cultures alongside an outstanding ability to manage complex logistics with calm efficiency.
Now a mum of three, Teresa brings her passion for travel into her role as Pioneer’s Client Manager, combining meticulous administrative skills with a genuinely warm, supportive approach. She has travelled extensively with Pioneer to destinations including Costa Rica, Mexico, Uganda, Thailand and Indonesia, giving her first-hand insight into many of the experiences our travellers enjoy.
As the reassuring voice behind the scenes, Teresa ensures every client is guided seamlessly from booking to departure, taking care of the details so our travellers can simply look forward to their adventure — confident that everything has been thoughtfully and professionally handled.
