Thailand ‘s covers 514,000km square and lies in the middle of mainland Southeast Asia. It is bordered by Burma to its North and West, Laos to the East and Cambodia and Malaysia to the South. It has over 3,000kms of coastline. The capital of Thailand is Bangkok.
The population of Thailand is around 70 million .
The politics of Thailand are conducted within the framework of a constitutional monarchy, whereby the Prime Minister is the head of government and a hereditary monarch is head of state.
The political situation in Thailand is unpredictable and sometimes volatile. Over recent years there have been instances of civil and political unrest resulting in large-scale demonstrations and, in some cases, violence. Avoid demonstrations or large gatherings. Regarding security and safe ordinary common sense precautions should be taken ie. Avoid carrying valuables obviously, do not carry too much cash and keep it securely, watch out for pickpockets (in busy areas – airports/markets), avoid walking around at night.
Thailand has a heavily export based economy including automotive exports and the manufacturing of electronic goods. Tourism also represents a significant proportion of its GDP (around 6%).
Standard Thai, also known as Central Thai or Siamese, is the official language of Thailand, spoken by over 20 million people. In addition to Standard Thai, Thailand is home to other related Thai languages including Khorat Thai.
Approx 95% of the population are Buddhist with the rest of the population being Muslim, Christian and other traditional religions.
The best & most popular time of year to travel to Thailand is during its cool season (Nov – Mar). This is when humidity is low, temperatures are pleasant (high 20’s) and skies are clear. We also recommend travel between July and September which although is the rainy season and temperatures are cooler, you do get lush vegetation and rains tend to be concentrated in short bursts in the afternoon.
“Thailand is a country of remarkable variety, from vibrant cities to rainforest parks and river valleys. On Pioneer Expeditions style journeys you can explore Khao Sok National Park, trek jungle trails alive with gibbons and hornbills, and canoe or raft along remote rivers. Cycling through rural villages with local guides whose knowledge of wildlife and habitats is exceptional gives you insight into the country’s ecosystems and communities. These trips combine wildlife, culture, and adventure across Thailand’s diverse landscapes, offering experiences few travellers encounter.”
