Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world with over 17,500 beautiful islands, spread over 3 time zones and the country with more coastlines than any other. Indonesia is also one of the most diverse countries in the world in terms of both human cultures and wildlife. The human cultures range from remote tribal groups in West Papua, to the sophisticated Hindu and Buddhist temples of Bali and central Java and ubiquitous Islamic mosques across much of the country. For incredible wildlife adventures, look no further than Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi and Sumatra for orang-utan, monkeys and bird life.
The islands around Flores also make a spectacular visit because they provide breath-taking scenery, unique traditional cultures and the stunning wildlife of the Komodo Dragons. Being a tropical country, the best time to visit Indonesia and get the most memorable experience is during dry season which is from March until November. As with all of our Indonesian holidays, we focus on sustainable and ethical travel using local guides and locally owned accommodation and our activities are, wherever possible, eco-friendly and sustainable. So if you are looking for a trip full of wildlife, kayaking, culture or a combination in a multi-activity holiday then you can trust Pioneer to deliver it for you.
Arguably Indonesia is the most diverse and interesting country you will ever visit. Spread over three time zones it is as large as Europe and with over 17,000 islands, about 6,000 of which are inhabited which are scattered over both sides of the equator. The largest are Java, Sumatra, Borneo (shared with Brunei and Malaysia), New Guinea (shared with Papua New Guinea), and Sulawesi. Indonesia shares land borders with Malaysia on Borneo, Papua New Guinea on the island of New Guinea, and East Timor on the island of Timor.
The capital, Jakarta, is on Java and is the nation’s largest city.
The population is around 238 million.
Indonesia is a republic with a presidential system. Power is concentrated in the central government.
Indonesia has the largest economy in South East Asia and in 2010 was the 27th biggest exporting country in the world. The industry sector is the economys largest followed by the service sector and agriculture.
Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) is the official language of Indonesia.
Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim majority country. Approximately 85% are Muslims consisting of Shias and Sunnis, 12% Christians (9% Protestant and 3% Catholic), 1.8% Hindu, 0.4% Buddhist and other.
The best time to travel to Indonesia is generally between May and October, during the drier season when warm temperatures, lower humidity and calmer seas create ideal conditions for exploring islands, rainforests and coral reefs. While short tropical showers can occur at any time, the wettest months are typically November to April, when heavier rains and higher humidity are more common in many parts of the archipelago.
“Indonesia offers unforgettable adventures, especially around the Komodo Islands. Kayaking through turquoise waters between rugged islands is an incredible experience, bringing you close to the unique landscapes and wildlife. Snorkelling here reveals vibrant coral reefs, manta rays, and schools of tropical fish, making every moment in the water remarkable. Pioneer Expeditions-style trips often combine this with a stay in Bali, allowing extra time to relax on pristine beaches and explore rice terraces, temples, and local culture—perfect for pairing adventure with rest in one of the world’s most diverse destinations.”
