There is no other landscape on earth quite like Madagascar, due to its separation from the Africa continent millions of years ago. As a result, it is home to a staggering 5% of the world’s known animal and plant species, including some 86 species and sub-species of Lemurs. Added to this are the unique human cultures of the Malagasy people which are a result of ancient migrations and traditions from Asia, Africa and Arabia.
And given its rugged landscapes, jungles and coastlines there are few places on earth that provide such a unique range of adventure and wildlife opportunities. The Pioneer team and our local partners have a deep knowledge and understanding of Madagascar. Without a doubt it’s our most treasured destination! Having operated here since 2007, we have developed an unrivalled range of trips from wildlife and nature to trekking, climbing, kayaking, rafting, cycling and photographic tours for groups, families and tailor made.
Madagascar is the 4th largest island in the world. It covers an area of 587,000km about the size of France and has nearly 5,000kms of coastline, with the Indian Ocean on the East and the Mozambique Channel on the west. The highest mountain is Mount Maromokotra (2,800m high) which is located in the Tsaranana Massive.
The capital of Madagascar is Antananarivo (more commonly referred to as Tana).
The population of Madagascar is around 21 million.
The political situation in Madagascar is unstable and has been since Jan 2009. That said, Madagascar is a stable and trouble-free country to visit as a tourist and Madagascan people are very friendly. Outside of the capital, few Madagascans know or care about the political situation.
Regarding security and safe ordinary common sense precautions should be taken ie. Avoid carrying valuables obviously, do not carry too much cash, watch out for pickpockets (in busy areas – airports/markets), avoid walking around city centres at night.
The main industries for Madagascar are textiles, mining (chrome, graphite, precious stones), agriculture (vanilla, sugar and coffee), shrimp farming and tourism. With regard to tourism Madagascar is a developing country and although an important part of the economy it is definitely in its early stages as such you will not find the infrastructure typical of other Eastern African countries.
Malagasy is the official language and is widely spoken in rural areas. French is also widely spoken in cities and is predominant in business. Our English speaking guides are local so their natural language is Malagasy, French is their 2nd language and English their 3rd.
Approx 45% of the population are Christian (Catholics and Protestants), approx. 10% are Muslim and the rest of the population practice traditional religions.
Having a great guide really makes a holiday. Pioneer only use local guides and working with our local partners have arguably the best adventure guides in Madagascar. Check out our ‘guide biographies and photos‘.
The best time to travel to Madagascar is generally between April and November, when conditions are typically drier and ideal for exploring the island’s national parks, rainforests and coastal regions. Wildlife viewing is excellent during these months, with many of Madagascar’s unique species active in the forests. The wettest period usually falls between December and March, when heavy rains and occasional cyclones can affect travel in some areas.
“Madagascar has been my passion from the very beginning, and it continues to captivate and inspire all who visit. We nurture this fascination through immersive learning experiences, offering a range of options—including stays in remote locations—where you can encounter the island’s extraordinary and unique wildlife. Living here has its challenges, from rugged road conditions to basic infrastructure, but every moment is worth it. From lemurs leaping through the forests to chameleons blending seamlessly into their surroundings, Madagascar reveals nature at its most remarkable, making it a destination unlike anywhere else on Earth.”

All visitors, regardless of nationality, require a visa to enter Madagascar. Tourist visas are
available upon arrival at the airport. Travellers only need to present their return ticket and pay the

accepted. AMEX is not accepted in Madagascar.

Visa for up to 30 days: 35 Euros / 41 USD
Visa for up to 60 days: 40 Euros / 47 USD
Visa for up to 90 days : 50 Euros / 59 USD
For additional information, an online visa service is available at www.evisamadagascar.com .
However, we do not recommend using this service at the moment, as the process can be lengthy and offers no advantages upon arrival.
The currency is Malagasy Ariary (MGA). Euros are also widely accepted (in the hotels) and can be used for larger tips when necessary, so we always recommend taking a backup of Euros. Credit cards (VISA) can be used in some hotels but you should always have a backup in case the hotel internet is down.
For your convenience we have partnered up with a currency exchange that off you next day delivery on any currency orders. Please note that Euros are available but not Malagasy Ariary. Order details along with any terms and conditions can be found at https://ttngtravel.money/pioneerexpeditions If ordered in advance (prior to paying your trip balance) – our local partners are able to offer a service for Malagasy Ariary, where you can order and pay for this in advance of your trip and we will provide you with this on arrival at your hotel. Alternatively you may be able to change money at the airport but not until you are through customs and ‘landside’. If you need to it is best to exchange either USD or EUR.
Adequate travel insurance is mandatory for everyone who participates in a Pioneer Expedition; this will need to cover you for emergency medical evacuation. The sooner you book your insurance, the sooner you are covered if you have cancelled your trip due to personal or family illness.
