The Indian economy is one of the world’s fastest growing economies. It is considered a newly industrialised country. The service sector makes up 54% of GDP, the agricultural sector (including rice, wheat, tea and sugarcane) 28%, and the industrial sector (including textiles, telecommunications, mining) 18%.
The region has a plethora of languages, which vary from state to state. English is widely spoken throughout the sub-continent.
The India is a vast country and the weather varies dramatically depending on where you are visiting. In general the north of India is cooler, the centre is hot and dry and the south is tropical. the weather is divided into three seasons – winter, summer, and the monsoon. Generally, the best time to visit India is during the winter, when the weather in most places is relatively cool and pleasant.
The best time to travel to India is generally between November and March, when cooler temperatures and clear skies make conditions ideal for exploring much of the country, including Rajasthan, the Golden Triangle and Kerala. From April to May temperatures rise sharply across much of northern and central India, although this can be a good time for wildlife viewing in national parks as animals gather around water sources. The monsoon season from June to October brings heavy rains to many regions, which can disrupt travel, though Ladakh in the far north is best visited during these summer months.

The local currency in India is called the rupee. There are notes of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 and coins of One rupee, Two rupee, 5 rupee and 10 rupee. It is strongly advisable to change money only at official exchange offices. All major credit cards (American Express, Master Card and Visa) are widely accepted at all hotels and major shops. A major credit card may come in handy and can be used in emergency situations.

Adequate travel insurance is mandatory for everyone who participates in a Pioneer Expedition; this will need to cover you for emergency medical evacuation. The sooner you book your insurance, the sooner you are covered if you have cancelled your trip due to personal or family illness.
