Chile is one of South America’s most dramatic and diverse destinations, stretching over 4,000 kilometres along the western edge of the continent. From the otherworldly landscapes of the Atacama Desert in the north to the glaciers and granite peaks of Patagonia in the south, the country offers an extraordinary range of environments and adventures. Along the way travellers can explore vibrant cities, world-renowned wine regions, remote national parks and the mysterious moai statues of Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean.
Chile’s varied landscapes make it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can trek in Patagonia’s spectacular national parks, explore salt flats and volcanoes in the Atacama Desert, discover wildlife-rich fjords and glaciers, or experience the culture and cuisine of Santiago and Valparaíso. With excellent infrastructure, political stability and a strong tradition of conservation, Chile has become one of South America’s leading adventure travel destinations.
Pioneer Expeditions offers exceptional journeys throughout Chile, from trekking and wildlife adventures in Patagonia to desert explorations and cultural discoveries, all of which can be tailored to your interests and pace of travel.
Chile is a long, narrow country stretching along the Pacific coast of South America, bordered by Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast and Argentina to the east, with the Andes Mountains forming its natural eastern boundary. The country spans a remarkable range of landscapes, from the Atacama Desert – the driest desert on earth – to the fjords, glaciers and mountains of Patagonia. Chile also includes the remote Easter Island (Rapa Nui) in the Pacific Ocean. The population is around 19 million, with the capital city Santiago serving as the political, cultural and economic centre of the country.
Chile is considered one of the most stable and well-governed countries in South America, with a democratic political system and strong institutions. Most areas visited by travellers are safe and well developed for tourism, although visitors should take normal precautions regarding personal belongings, particularly in busy urban areas.
Chile has one of the strongest economies in Latin America, supported by mining, agriculture, wine production and international trade. Tourism has grown significantly in recent years, with travellers drawn by the country’s spectacular natural landscapes, national parks and outdoor adventure opportunities.
Spanish is the official language of Chile. English is increasingly spoken in tourism areas, hotels and major cities, particularly in regions popular with international travellers.
Chile can be visited year-round thanks to its long north–south geography and varied climates. In general, the best time to explore Patagonia and southern Chile is between October and April, when temperatures are milder and days are longer for trekking and outdoor activities. The Atacama Desert in the north can be visited throughout the year, with warm days and clear skies providing excellent conditions for exploring salt flats, volcanoes and high-altitude landscapes.
“For such a spectacularly thin country, Chile has an incredible breadth of landscapes. I love that you can be in one of the driest places on Earth—the Atacama Desert—in the morning, and by afternoon find yourself somewhere among the wettest, like Puerto Montt. Head further south and you encounter surreal, jagged glacial peaks before quite literally reaching the end of the world. With pumas and penguins living surprisingly close together, it’s a dream destination for wildlife, adventure, and unforgettable landscapes..”

Learn MoreThe currency in Colombia is the Colombian Peso (COP). Cash can be exchanged at banks, bureaux de change and some hotels. Credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted. There are also plenty of ATMs (which have an English language option) in the big cities. For spending money, it is best to have money in local currency (COP) and upon your arrival in Colombia we can arrange a visit to a local bank or ATM. The majority of hotels, restaurants, and stores accept debit and credit cards (Visa and Master Card, but not American Express). Traveller’s cheques are not widely used in Colombia and therefore relatively difficult and expensive to convert to cash.
