Ecuador may be one of South America’s smallest countries, but it offers an extraordinary diversity of landscapes and wildlife. From the volcanic peaks of the Andes and the misty cloud forests of the highlands to the rivers and jungles of the Amazon Basin, Ecuador is a country made for exploration. Off the Pacific coast lie the legendary Galápagos Islands – one of the world’s greatest wildlife destinations, located around 1,000km from the mainland.
The Galápagos are famously associated with English naturalist Charles Darwin, who visited the islands aboard HMS Beagle in 1835. His observations of the islands’ unique species helped form the basis of his theory of evolution through natural selection. Today the archipelago remains one of the best places on earth to encounter wildlife at close quarters.
Our Ecuador and Galápagos journeys allow you to fully immerse yourself in these remarkable environments. In Ecuador’s mainland you can trek through Andean national parks, explore colonial towns, or travel deep into the Amazon rainforest by river canoe. In the Galápagos, days are spent exploring the islands by boat, kayak or on foot, discovering extraordinary wildlife including sea lions, marine iguanas, giant tortoises, blue-footed boobies, rays, tropical fish and reef sharks.
Combining Ecuador with the Galápagos offers a truly unique adventure, allowing you to experience an incredible range of ecosystems within a single journey — from Andean volcanoes and cloud forests to the wildlife-rich waters of the Pacific.
Ecuador sits on the equator on South America’s Pacific coast and contains four distinct regions: the Andes mountains, the Amazon rainforest, the Pacific coastline, and the Galápagos Islands. Located around 1,000km from the mainland, the Galápagos archipelago consists of 13 major islands, five of which are inhabited. The islands cover around 8,000 km² of land spread across more than 45,000 km² of ocean.
Ecuador is a democratic republic and tourism is an important part of the economy. Most areas visited by travellers are considered safe, although as with any destination sensible precautions should always be taken.
Spanish is the official language of Ecuador, although English is widely spoken in many tourist areas, particularly in the Galápagos and major cities.
Ecuador can be visited year-round due to its varied geography. In the Andean highlands, the drier months from June to September often offer the clearest conditions for exploring cities and mountain landscapes. The Amazon rainforest is warm and humid throughout the year, with wildlife viewing possible in all seasons, although rainfall is common. In the Galápagos Islands, conditions are generally good year-round, with December to May bringing warmer seas and sunnier weather, while June to November offers cooler temperatures and nutrient-rich waters that attract abundant marine life.
“When you arrive on Ecuador’s mainland, the first thing you notice is the line of volcanoes rising along the Andes. Cotopaxi dominates the landscape, its near-perfect snow-capped cone standing above the windswept páramo. In colonial Quito you wander through narrow streets and lively plazas, where churches, balconies and stone buildings reflect the city’s Spanish heritage. Further east the journey descends into the Napo region of the Amazon, where dense rainforest shelters remarkable biodiversity. Here you may spot colourful macaws, troops of monkeys, river turtles and even elusive pink river dolphins, while nearby Indigenous communities continue traditions of forest life and conservation”

Adequate travel insurance is mandatory for everyone who participates in a Pioneer Expedition. In addition to this when visiting Ecuador and the Galapagos your insurance needs to include emergency medical cover. Health insurance is a legal requirement for everyone entering Ecuador; migration officials will ask to see this documentation. On arrival you should have copies of your insurance policy, including the medical cover, available for inspection. Also the sooner you book your travel insurance, the sooner you are covered if you have to cancel your trip due to personal or family illness.
