From £3500

Trip Details

Camp, raft and trek through this beautiful region

This adventurous expedition takes us off the beaten track as we explore Borneo’s remote jungle. We begin our adventure by rafting down the Kiulu River, a cycle back up through the beautiful valley, before we begin our trek through the hot humid rainforest and traditional Dusun villages. We camp in villages where few tourists visit and the ladies love to cook for us with food from their farms and show us a little of their cultural dancing and songs. The trek finishes with sun rise on the highest peak of South East Asia, Mount Kinabalu. The view from the summit is spectacular out over the South China Sea. A much rewarded bath in the hot springs is well deserved after the descent. At the end of our trek we head south wildlife spotting at the Kinabatangan Wildlife Reserve and Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1

Kota Kinabalu

We will be met at the airport and transferred to our hotel in the centre of Kota Kinabalu. Dinner this evening will be at a typical Malaysian restaurant featuring local food.

Day 2

Rafting on the Kiulu River and Bike in the Kiulu Valley

This morning we have a short transfer to the beautiful Kiulu valley where we go white water rafting on the Kiulu River (Grade 2). Following a BBQ lunch and some time to relax by the river, we then set out on our bikes and cycle through the Kiulu valley to our campsite at Rangalau Camp.

Day 3

Trekking

This morning we wake up to the view of Mount Kinabalu. After breakfast, we need a 25 minute tranfer to begin trekking into a remote area of Sabah. Moving away from the river we set out into the jungle and pass through the occasional village. The trekking is hot and sweaty with some steep hills to climb. Tonight we sleep in tents or hammocks or the village community hall at Kampung Sinasang where the ladies in the village will cook us a typical Malaysian feast.

Day 4

Trekking until Rungus Mahaba

We continue our trek from Kampung Sinasang through beautiful forest, to our next camp at a village called Rungus Mahaba. Again it will be a tough day as much of the terrain is hilly but the views are spectacular and we pass through a pretty village with very friendly local people. We sleep in tents or haammocks or the village community hall.

Day 5

Trekking in the Jungle and Kundasang

After breakfast we set off trekking again until  we reach Pekan Nabalu, a little market area on the road to Mount Kinabalu. From here, we will take a short bus transfer to Kundasang where we will overnight in 2 star hotel with the most amazing views of Mount Kinabalu.

Day 6

Climbing Mount Kinabalu

Today, we head to the National Park where we begin our 7 km climb up to the mountain hut on the slopes of Mount Kinabalu. Tonight we sleep in dorms at the mountain huts at Laban Rata, some 3280 meters ASL.

Day 7

Trekking to the summit and hot springs

This morning we depart from our hut at 3am and trek up to the summit, as the sun is rising. It is a spectacular view of the foothills, down to the South China Sea. We then descend back to the park HQ and take a bus to poring Hot Springs to spend the evening relaxing our tired legs in the baths.

Day 8

Kinabatangan Wildlife Reserve

Our next destination is the Kinabatangan Wildlife Reserve. On arrival, we will have time to settle in before heading out on an afternoon and sunset river cruise. This reserve is famous for its abundance of wildlife and we guarantee that you will see proboscis monkeys in the wild. There are also regular sightings of wild orangutan, elephants, gibbons, hornbills and crocodiles.

Day 9

River Cruise and Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary

Another early morning today as we wake up before the sun rises to embark on a dawn river cruise to watch the wildlife come to life. It is fascinating to watch the proboscis monkeys waken in their canopy homes. After breakfast, we transfer to Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary via Gomantong caves arriving in time for the afternoon feeding session.

Day 10

Rainforest Discovery Centre and Canopy Walkway

Before we leave for our flight to Kota Kinabalu, we will have time to visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre and the canopy walkway. Tonight we stay in a small beach resort with a swimming pool.

Day 11
