Monteverde cloud forest:
Cloud forests are as the name suggests; hazy mist or low lying clouds that cover the upper canopy of the forest. These rare forests cover just 1% of global woodlands and can only be found in tropical and subtropical mountainous areas. The thick layer of clouds makes it more difficult for the sun to break through, providing a slower rate of evaporation, which gives the plants plenty of life-giving moisture, which in turn promotes a huge biodiversity.
Monteverde cloud forests is host to 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, and 1,200 species of amphibians and reptiles. Additionally, it is also one of the few remaining homes to all 6 species of the cat family; Jaguars, Ocelots, Pumas, Oncillas, Margays and Jagurundis.

Day 8 - 9
Today we transfer to the Tenoria National park area.
The Río Celeste gets its name from the unusual color of the water. The deep turquoise hue is a result of the Buenavista River and its silicon particles meeting the more acidic Sour Creek, the combination causes the suspended particles in the Río Celeste to scatter light, creating the turquoise colour
Rio Celeste Hike:
Starting with a moderate hike, you’ll be rewarded with views of the Rio Celeste
waterfall and its distinct blue coloring. Follow the stairs down to the water’s edge and you can witness the stunning 60-foot waterfall as it empties into a pool of sky blue water. Continuing down the well-maintained path and venturing across hanging bridges that span the river, you’ll find its origins in an azure lagoon further up the trail. The Rio
Celeste in Costa Rica is surrounded by the emerald green forests of the National Park, creating an experience unlike any other. You’ll even get to witness the two rivers that mix to create the Rio Celeste and where they combine is where the vibrant blue color begins. The Rio Celeste’s blue water comes from the minerals in the volcanic rock, but seeing them in person will feel like you are experiencing magic in nature.

Having met Laurenne a few years ago and then planned this holiday with Rafe a year ahead for a group of six of us, we had time to look forward to it in the knowledge that we were going to enjoy our wildlife adventures, but what an under-estimation that proved to be! The sheer number and variety of bird species we found, the diversity of forests and coastal environments, the incredible scenery, and the friendliness of everyone we met – it all came together to give us an absolutely wonderful holiday.
Our guide, Martin, really enhanced our travels, not only with his knowledge of the birds and his ability to find them, but also his enthusiasm for his country and other fauna and flora. He was a careful driver and very attentive of our needs, plus spot on with his ideas for extra activities, and very good company too!
A huge thank you to Pioneer Expeditions and their local agents
Well where do I start! From the outset. Pioneer were on hand to help us plan the most perfect trip to Costa Rica.
Every detail was considered and they were on hand to help with every query. We had regular contact and given all the details we needed in the lead up to our trip.
The actual trip was brilliant and our guide Juve was outstanding! He was so friendly, knowledgeable and couldn't have been more helpful. He really made the trip special.
Hugely recommend booking through Pioneer, we hope to book another in the future and Pioneer will be our first port of call.
Thanks again. Tash & Matt.
Than you so much Tash and Matt. Much appreciated :)
Our trip to Costa Rica fulfilled all our expectations and hopes. Our guide, Juve, who was with us throughout, went out of his way to answer all our questions and make our stay as enjoyable as possible. He was a very steady and safe driver. His great knowledge of birds, plants, animals and insects really enhanced our stay. And he was knowledgeable too about politics, history and the economy. He was a great companion. Another outstanding guide we had the pleasure of doing nocturnal and daytime walking tours with, was Marvin at Braulio Carrillo National Park. Highlights for us were Los Lirios Lodge, feeling right in the middle of the coastal forest, and the amazing bird watching: toucans, scarlet macaws and roseate spoonbills. The clean air, blue skies and the bright colours of birds and plants were fantastic. Swimming in the Pacific Ocean was also special, with frigate birds gliding overhead. Pura vida!
In a word, our holiday was incredible!
You really hit our brief with this tailormade 2 weeks in Costa Rica, with wildlife and scenery being at the centre. Costa Rica has really embraced tourism as a way to save their environment, we felt so welcome.
From the moment we stepped off the plane in San Jose, where we had a private transfer to meet us, to dropping off our hire car at the end, everything was so well organised, punctual and thorough. Each national park/stop was incredible and could see why you included it in the trip. The excursions were great, esp. the private ones and we really appreciated the semi structured style of this holiday so give us some flexibility too as we like to fill every moment! Having a hire car was a great idea, driving in Costa Rica was very easy. The location of all the various places we stayed were fantastic, especially our final stop in Boca Topada, this place was magical.
We do not think we could pick a favourite stop during our trip as each was amazing and offered something different and instead, we had a highlight at each stop. We have to say the tour guides at Brauillo were incredible! SO enthusiastic and knowledgeable. They deserve special praise.
We would have no hesitation in recommending you to other people to use and looking to use you again in the future. We had a wonderful stress free time. Apart from all the mosquito bites.
